なぜ「茶柱が立つと縁起がいい」と言われているのだろう？ 調査してみると、大きくはみっつの説に分けられるようだ。

ひとつは「単純に珍しいから」説。茶柱とは、茶葉の茎の部分。第一に、細かく砕けた茶葉ならまだしも、茎が急須の網の目をかいくぐり、湯のみに入ること自体が珍しい。そのうえ「立つ」となると、なかなかお目にかかれるものではない…ということで、吉兆だとされるようになった、というのが分かりやすい説だ。

ふたつめは「なんにしても“柱が立つ”のは縁起がいい」説。家の柱＝大黒柱が立つ、という連想から、一家の安寧や繁栄につながる、と考えられるようになった、とする向きも多いみたい。

みっつめが、「いま流行りのステマ（ステルスマーケティング）」説。「二番茶」が売れ残ることに悩んだ商人が「縁起ものにすれば売れるんじゃないか？」ということで流した噂が広まった…という説だが、なるほど二番茶は、成長した葉を使うため、茎が多く混じりがち。茶柱が立ちやすい、ということだ。
